There are 4 steel-toe boots and 8 hiking boots in a dark closet. How many boots have to be pulled out so that there is a matching pair?
Answer:
3 – you may pull one steel-toe out, then the next boot may be either a steel-toe or a hiking boot. If it’s a steel-toe, then it only took 2 boots. If the 2nd boot is a hiking boot, then the next boot will match either the steel-toe or the hiking boot – so the 3rd pair will match one of the other boots for certain.
